If you’re interested in health, you’ve probably heard the term “superfoods” floating around. But what exactly are superfoods, and why are they so special?

Simply put, superfoods are foods that have benefits in addition to simple nutrition. They are packed with nutrients and offer a range of health benefits. These nutrients can include vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other beneficial plant compounds. Superfoods are often considered “powerhouse” foods because they provide a high dose of nutrients in a relatively small serving size.

When we first started developing our drinks, we wanted to make sure that all the flavours we develop originated from plants that grow natively in Canada. We have a tendency to look for superfoods in faraway places, when we have an embarrassment of riches grow in our own backyard.

What are common examples of superfoods?

While there is no official definition of superfoods, some common examples include berries, leafy greens, nuts, mushrooms, and certain types of fish. These foods are often praised for their reported ability to support everything from heart health to brain function to immune system support.

Superfoods from Canada

While superfoods can be found all around the world, there are also many delicious and nutritious superfoods that are native to Canada that we use in our botanical tonics. Here are a few examples:

  • Blueberries: These sweet little berries are a great source of antioxidants, which can help protect the body’s cells from damage. They’re also a good source of vitamin C and fiber.
  • Staghorn Sumac is a shrub of the genus Rhus of the family Anacardiaceae and grows wild in Southern Canada and the Northern US. It’s a good source of antioxidants and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. A tea made from the red berries has traditionally been used to fight respiratory ailments.
  • Elderberries: These small, dark berries are packed with antioxidants and have been used for centuries as a natural remedy for colds and flu. They’re also a good source of vitamin C and other nutrients.
  • Spruce: Some potential health benefits of spruce include its ability to reduce inflammation, improve respiratory function, and boost the immune system. The Indigenous people of North America have traditionally used spruce tea to prevent scurvy, an illness caused by lack of vitamin C.
